Chlorella is a fresh water algae that is condensed with a number of vitamins and minerals which is why many consider it a super food. Its also filled with antioxidants that add to the benefits this substance provides us. The antioxidants help combat free radicals in our bodies which are a type of molecule that loses its electron, splitting the cells (allowing disease to manifest). Then it tries to pair up with other healthy living cells in the body causing damage to the cells and our DNA. Free radicals have been associated with a number of diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. They are usually created in the body due to elements in the environment like pollutants and pesticides and from the type of diet we consume like fried foods and alcohol.
This algae provides us with a number of beneficial vitamins and minerals:
- vitamin A
- vitamin B2
- vitamin B3
- vitamin B12
So many elements our bodies need to function optimally!
Chlorella also has the effect of detoxification. It works to remove heavy metals in the body, like mercury. It works to cleanse the whole body including the blood, liver and intestinal tract which helps with digestion. Chlorella is often suggested for those undergoing chemotherapy to help remove the chemicals that remain in the body. You may notice yourself going to the bathroom more often when first consuming chlorella which is part of the detoxing effect. It also works to boost the immune system. Our brain benefits, our blood even our teeth and gums. Chlorella contains chlorophyll which helps move oxygen to the blood, improves bones and strengthens teeth.
Chlorella can be found at the health food store in tablet and powder form. Try to sprinkle some into your food daily! I tend to through it into my oatmeal, yogurts and smoothies and even into pasta sauce sometimes. It has a slight taste, not very strong but I really don’t mind knowing the benefits it’s providing to my body!
