Egg Farming and Vegan Alternatives

Painting by: Yolande Laverdure Dubois

Eggs farming is a well kept secret but not for long. With more information about industrial farming we are now being exposed to the truth about where our eggs actually come from.

Here are 8 secrets the egg farming industry does not want you to know:

  • 6,000,000,000 newborn male chicks are destroyed every year.
  • Males are essentially worthless in the egg industry therefore they are disposed of like trash. They are suffocated to death or ground up alive
  • Female chicks are sent to egg farms and as a result of genetic manipulation and selective breeding produce 250-300 eggs per year while wild hens only produce 10-15 eggs annually
  • 95% of birds spend their lives in small cages where they are unable to stretch their wings
  • Farmers cut of portions of their sensitive beaks in order to prevent them from pecking one another as a result of high stress
  • Natural chickens can live up to 10-15 years while egg laying bred chickens are gassed or thrown into live dead piles just after 10-18 months when their egg production declines
  • Chickens are still conscious when their throats are slit
  • New born chicks are intelligent, alert, and aware of their environment

Let’s stop the torture and use healthy vegan alternatives to eggs:

  • 1 tablespoon of chia + 3 tablespoons of water
  • 1 tablespoon of flax + 3 tablespoons of water
  • ¼ of avocado
  • 3 tablespoons of peanut butter
  • ¼ banana
  • ¼ unsweetened apple sauce
