Negative Effects of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate has gotten a lot of negative attention for being a harmful ingredient and many brands have emphasized on marketing “SLS Free”… even though it may be lacking that ingredient don’t let it blind you from the potential uses of other harmful ingredients (that don’t have as much negative public recognition)

Are you aware of the negative effects of this ingredient? It’s used in products we use everyday like:

  • Shampoo
  • Soap
  • Toothpaste
  • Detergent
  • Make up
  • Mouth wash
  • Shaving cream
  • Stain remover

These are products you are consuming on a daily basis that your body is absorbing directly into the blood.

SLS is a synthetic ingredient and inexpensive to use. Its mainly used in products to create a lathering effect. Its become very popular for companies to use for their products. Its cheap for a company to use and keeps the products lathering giving the customer the impression that its effective and really working (which is only perceived to be a good thing because of marketing and media advertising)

This ingredient is found in many cleaning agents and is known to be a skin and eye irritant. Studies have shown lingering levels of SLS in the lungs, liver, brain and gums. Studies have also shown SLS to have a negative effect on our hormones. Its chemical make up reduces the ability of our cells to heal themselves and after prolonged use can have an irreversible effect. It’s an active ingredient used in herbicide and pesticides because it has the ability to penetrate plant tissue of plants to disrupt cellular structure, it can kill plants within hours of contact.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, lauryl sulfate salts (which contains the active ingredient of SLS) are used as flea and tick repellants…not something you want to be soaking your teeth and hair in.

Keep in mind that just because a product claims to be SLS free doesn’t mean it doesn’t have other ingredients that are harmful!

Go through the ingredients list in the products you have at home and see if you can see Sodium Lauryl Sulfate listed. Check out and research the other ingredients you see listed and see if they may cause any harm to you!
