Refined Oils: How it works

Refined oils are a big NO NO for your health. It’s an unhealthy method of taking the oils from its seed (often the seeds have been genetically modified to be adequate for mass production). During this intensive chemical process, heat is used which leads to the natural nutrients being removed and due to the temperatures, oxidation occurs. That means the oils can break down more easily into free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals are a normal result of oxygen metabolism that happens in our body but when environmental factors including our food contribute to this. It causes a dramatic increase which causes damage to our cells, tissues and DNA (cancer is a disease most noticeably filled with free radicals).

Hexane is used as a solvent in the process of oil refinery.  It’s a by product of petroleum and crude oil and often used as an industrial cleaner. Its good at separating oils from other substances. According to the United States Environmental Protection Group, different levels of hexane exposure can affect he central nervous system, cause dizziness, headaches, muscles weakness and fatigue. This isn’t something you want to be touching the food you ingest.

The oil refining process goes through a bleaching phase, to remove the colour from the oil to give it a lighter colour (bleaching agents often include charcoals and clays).

Deodorization takes place to give the oils a neutral taste. Due to the levels of heat for this, it diminishes the nutrients even more.

Often vegetable oils are also linked to inflammation in the body.

Refined Oils Include:

  • Canola/ Rapeseed Oil
  • Soy Bean Oil
  • Corn Oil
  • Sunflower Oil
  • Safflower Oil
  • Peanut Oil

Unrefined Oils:

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Avocado Oil
  • Sesame Oil
