Fruit should be eaten on an EMPTY stomach.
Growing up I would always eat my meal first then follow it with fruit as a sweet dessert but by doing that, it limited the benefits of fruits to my body. When we eat food first and then follow it with fruit, when they come into contact in the stomach and digestive juices, the food begins to spoil or ferment. That’s the effect it has of being held in the stomach together for too long. That’s why some people get the feeling of indigestion, heartburn or burping after eating a meal followed by fruit.
When food is eaten on its own it can be more easily processed. Eating fruit on an empty stomach or alone helps to better absorb the antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals. You should eat fruits about an hour before your meals or a couple of hours after you’ve had one, depending on how heavy the meal was. Wait longer for pasta to digest in your system compared to a light salad.
Its best the have fruit first thing in the morning. If you decide to have breakfast first, snack on some fruit before lunch time (after you’ve let breakfast digest of course). Typically people have 3 large meals a day, if that’s your style, snacking on fruit is a healthy and beneficial filler to consume in between meals, to keep the metabolism moving and to make sure you don’t get too hungry and binge eat during your meals.
