What Chemicals are Hiding in your Mascara?

 

Mascara is still my go to when it comes to putting on makeup. I can leave the house with just mascara and some shea butter and feel great; I know I’m not alone. This makeup routine stable is the second most purchased makeup item in the United States.

With such love for mascara we have a HUGE problem with brands that flood the market who use chemicals and even contain tar. Mascara is such a short distance to our sensitive eyes therefore we must be more conscious about the products we use.

There is no question the uncertainty of products that are smudge and water proof and need specific products to be removed. When we shop for products like mascara and lipstick we are not taught to look at the labels. In fact, checking labels in food has only began to surface to a level of importance recently. There are still a large number of chemical filled products that don’t automatically come to are awareness when we use them, mascara is one of them.

 

The following are a list of products you may find in your mascara and what they are doing to your body:

1)      Coal Tar Dyes:

What are they used for?

These dyes are used as a colorant in mascara.

How to spot them?
–        FD & C Blue no. 1 on the label

–        You may find them listed as a five digit number that is preceded by a Cl. (includes D&C Blue 1, Green 3, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Red 33, etc.)

–        Aminphenol, Diaminodenzene or Phenylenediamine.

What is it?
Coal tar is a mixture of many chemicals, derived from petroleum. It was recognized as a human carcinogen in 1938 and contains heavy metals that are toxic to the brain.
Risks associated?

–        allergic reactions

–        asthma attacks

–         headaches

–         nausea

–         fatigue,

–        lack of concentration

–        nervousness

–        linked to an increased risk of Hodgkin’s disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

 

2)      Parabens

What are they used for? They are used as preservatives to stop the growth of microbes, fungi, and bacteria in order to extend shelf life. How do I spot them?

–        Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, and Propylparaben

What is it?

Risks Associated?

–        Increase in breast cancer by mimicking estrogen

–        Endocrine disruptor

–        Absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the tiny pores around your eyes

–        Reproductive toxicity

–        Neurotoxicity

–        Skin irritation

 

3)      Formaldehyde

What are they used for? They are used as preservatives to stop the growth of microbes, fungi, and bacteria in order to extend shelf life. How do I spot them?
–        Bronopol and Quaternium-15

–        formaldehyde

Risks Associated?

–        Skin irritation

–        Increase liver toxicity

–        Severe allergic rashes

 

 

4)      Thimerosal

 

 

What are they used for? They are used as preservatives and antiseptic. This product has been band in every cosmetic exept those used around the eyes.

How do I spot them?
–        Bronopol and Quaternium-15

–        formaldehyde

What is it?

A mercury based element.

Risks Associated?

–        Skin irritation

–        Allergic reactions

–        Neurotoxic manifestations

–        Mercury is considered particularly toxic to the developing brain during pregnancy, infancy and childhood

I started doing research regarding our skincare products and cosmetics and when I was exposed to all of this information I instantly felt angry and then sick to my stomach.
