For centuries women have been persecuted, marginalized, used abused, and even burned for their powers. As women we are the center of creation. The physical connection to the cosmos and to the divine. Our sensuality our wisdom has been condemned. When we hear the term witch we often think of Halloween, Horror, and witchcraft as bad. Our Society has developed a manipulated image of the Witch as negative, scary, and that we should fear them. We hear stories of Herstory, where witches engaged in rituals, herbal medicine, and embraced their sexuality understanding the power of this energy. Witches we’re aware of how to use Sexual Energy to commune, to manifest, and to make magic. Men and women who were found to have engaged in witchcraft we’re publicly burned to death. There is no question why the true nature of the Witch burned to ashes with the woman and men who practiced. In fear of losing their lives witches had to hide, the era of the medicine woman died with the secrets were buried in the soils.
During the early modern witch hunts female sexuality was viewed as an abomination. Women and their bodies we’re misunderstood by the man, they feared they would be overtaken by the charms of Satan. When we look at the symbolism of the Witch there is a familiar image of her flying on a broomstick which has surprisingly sexual origin.
The Symbol Of the Broomstick
Women would soak, smother, or saturate a broom handle with hallucinogenic herbs before pushing it up their vagina to absorb the opiates through the old mucus membranes. Yes, Women would literally ride the broomstick. And this is where the symbolism derives from. Before the 19th century you would see women painted drawn naked on broomsticks, and it was for this very reason. Michael Pollan in the book The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World states herbalists, midwives, the “witches” would use hallucinogenic opiates. He explains, “These ingredients would be combined in a hempseed-oil-based ‘flying ointment’ that the witches would then administer vaginally using a special dildo,” he writes. “This was the ‘broomstick’ by which these women were said to travel.”
“In rifleing the closet of the ladie, they found a pipe of oyntment, wherewith she greased a staffe, upon which she ambled and galloped through thick and thin.
— 1324 investigation of suspected witch Lady Alice Kyteler.”
Embracing and engaging in such an act was a jeopardy to patriarchy. At the time Men feared women choosing to do what she wished. Women who did as they pleased to their own body and mind were accused of being associated with the Devil instilling fear in men.Women were burned and were killed because they dared to explore such personal liberties. Freedom to embrace their sexuality, honor their bodies, and harness the power of Sexual Energy were destroyed. The tale of the evil witch emerged and the truth about the power a sexuality and the connection to Nature was tainted and destroyed.
This misconception is now burning to ashes as the men fail to realize the women and men they burned where seeds. Witches are re-emerging From the Ashes. Spreading and sharing the wisdom of the Divine, of our mother earth, and our sexuality. We are reclaiming our powers, empowering others on our journey. Creating a new Earth of women and men harnessing their powers, embracing their authenticity, and connecting to their true natural sexual energies. It is in our nature to be sexual beings. We are born to feel Joy, pleasure, and happiness. We are worthy and we are allowed to feel pleasure all the time. Pleasure does not always have to be sexual in nature but if we so choose to embrace, honor, and fulfill this piece of us then we can without persecution.
I encourage you to embrace and honor your sexuality in any way that makes you feel good. This is your story, how will you use the power of your pussy?
